Fox News Poll: 79% Say U.S. Economy Could Collapse
Here are a few highlights from the Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll:
"The latest Fox News poll finds that 79 percent of voters think it’s possible the economy could collapse, including large majorities of Democrats (72 percent), Republicans (84 percent) and independents (80 percent).
"Just 18 percent think the economy is "so big and strong it could never collapse."
"Moreover, 78 percent of voters believe the federal government is "larger and more costly" than it has ever been before, and by nearly three-to-one more voters think the national debt (65 percent) is a greater potential threat to the country’s future than terrorism (23 percent)."
I tend to be suspicious of polls, but this one strikes me as generally plausible because it squares with what I see and hear within my own sphere of experience.
I submit the premise that this is in fact good news. We find ourselves on the brink of a fiscal precipice because most Americans take way too damned much for granted. We've let our political representatives of all stripes slather us into lethargy with an endless feast of pork.
Every responsible adult understands that you can't spend more money than you make for any length of time without getting into trouble. Many of us have learned this the hard way. The only difference between family finances and government finances is that the government can print the money. That delays the inevitable, but makes the end result even more painful.
The sooner large numbers of Americans wake up and retake control of our Republic, the less painful the coming crash will be.
