The situation in Haiti is beyond the comprehension of the average person. Leading the effort to bring aid to a suffering nation is the American military. Each of those aircraft carriers brings not only supplies and the helicopters to deliver them, but electrical generation, water purification, multiple hospitals--and perhaps most important--professionals who know how to lead in a crisis.
Meanwhile back here at home, Red-Cross volunteers are packing their bags, and regular Americans are pulling out their checkbooks. Suddenly our own financial woes are seen in their proper perspective.
Oh sure, our, "allies," will chip in as well. They'll toss in a few bucks. Some will send a ship-load of volunteers and supplies. Doctors without Borders will do some good stuff. So will the International Red Cross.
But America will show up with flotillas of ships, as many military transport aircraft as the airport can manage and billions in voluntary donations. You know--the same sort of response you saw when a tsunami crushed a predominantly Muslim nation halfway around the world.
I'm proud of my country. It isn't perfect, but it has the biggest heart in the world. If you don't see it that way you can kiss my big, fat, patriotic Conservative ass.
